Daughter of Luther Morris and Evelyn Boney Boulware, she was born April 17, 1922 in Fairfield County.  Ethel was the last surviving child of nine siblings:  Curtis Stewart, Robert Leslie, Leon Ross, Morris Luther, James Earl, Ervin Richard, Allie Mae and Ruth Evelyn.

She and her late husband, Caughman Smith had three daughters:  Susie Cameron, Mary “Lois” Craft and Frances Mattox (deceased).  She is also survived by four granddaughters, April Craft Spires, Ginger Mattox, Joye Cameron and Summer Mattox; two great-granddaughters, Hannah and Maggie Spires.  She was predeceased by sons-in-law, John David Mattox and Julius Cameron.

Ethel was well known for her “green thumb” and love of nature and had many talents.  She enjoyed many crafts including crochet, doll making, knitting, sketching and painting.  She was an avid reader and after attending night school, she graduated high school at age 50.

Ethel was a lifetime member of The Lake Wateree VFW Ladies Auxiliary and for many years, she graced the dance floor with the line dancers.  She was also a member of the Helping Hands Club and Longtown Presbyterian Church.

There are not enough words to describe her good nature, giving spirit and easy laughter.  She has inspired and enriched many lives.  We will miss her deeply but we understand her soul has lived, learned, loved and completed what was needed.

“Death is like sitting near a railroad track.  A train comes along.  You don’t see much, just a blur-noise-shade for just a bit.  Then it passes.  Sun shines again.  The noise goes away.  You get up and go on your way.”      -Ethel B. Smith
