The Management and Support Staff sadly announce the death of Mr. Milo B. Martin, III of Florence, South Carolina formerly of Winnsboro, South Carolina. 

Mr. Martin departed his earthly life Thursday, July 13, 2017, at Peedee Gardens, Florence, South Carolina.  

Funeral Services will be held Monday, July 17, 2017, 1:00 p.m. at Salem Presbyterian Church, 276 State Hwy 215 N. Blair, South Carolina 29015. 

Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Milo Berry Martin III, passed away peacefully in his sleep Thursday, July 13, 2017 at Pee Dee Gardens in Florence, SC after a long battle with several chronic conditions he endured stoically in his waning years. He was four months and two weeks shy of his 90th birthday.

He was born in the family home in Blair, SC on November 27, 1927 to Milo Berry Martin, Jr. and Bertha Mae Blair Martin, the third of five children and the eldest son. His father died tragically in an accident at the Blair quarry when he was only seven years old. He, like his siblings, grew up in a time defined by that and the Great Depression. Consequently, he was a very resourceful man and could do most anything with his hands including write with both of them!

He attended Monticello School and then enlisted in the US Army in time to join the occupational forces of World War II in Europe and remained in through the Korean War. He then had a break in service during the mid to late fifties where he was employed by the forestry service in the Pee Dee area of South Carolina he decided that his life was truly back in the military and he rejoined the United States Army. He met and married Patricia Scott while he was stationed with the Third Army Headquarters, then in Atlanta. They, in the next few years had three sons and he was transferred back to Germany in 1963. A daughter arrived while in Germany in 1965. He then was transferred to Fort Riley Kansas where the 9th Infantry Division was preparing to embark on a deployment to Viet Nam. He did 2 tours there and in the early 70s came back to the US as a supply instructor at Fort Jackson where he worked until his retirement in 1970. He spent his remaining employed years as a fireman, a correctional officer and lastly, as a rural letter carrier for the US Postal Service.

Between all this, he also was a strong disciplinarian father for us four children. His life was defined in all those ways as a public servant and as a strong provider for our family. He was such a strong figure that almost our entire neighborhood looked up to him and used him for advice and counsel. He had a well-developed sense of humor which shined through even when ravaged by dementia in his waning years and he will be missed by all his children: Jerry Boatwright, Robert Martin, Richard Martin, Wallace Martin and Sheryl Martin, his grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife Patricia Scott Martin, by his second wife Hazel Boatwright Powers Martin and all his brothers and sisters. He will be interred with five generations of our family at the Salem Presbyterian Church Cemetery on Monday, July 17, 2017.
