I worked with Willie at Weyerhaeuser on his summer breaks from Evergreen. He was a good friend; our daughter, Jenny, adored him. We lost touch with each other after I moved to Illinois. I stumbled across this obituary today. So sorry to hear about his passing. Willie loved teaching.

Condolences to the family on the loss of Dr. W. Parson.  I met Dr. Parson when I chose my major-Medicine-1982, The Evergreen State College, Olympia, WA. I was a pre-med student and there were very few racial minorities & even less Native American/First Nation students. He listened to me each time I spoke of missing my family and how I could do the work but I wanted to go home!  I left TESC after a year and pursued a career in Chemical Dependency Counseling and decided to go back to TESC-Tacoma Campus.  I became re-acquainted with Dr. Parson there in 1994 and recieved by BA Degree.  During my final project, 1996,  I wrote of "coming full circle" and made a note of being able to be a student under the auspices of Dr. Parson--I cried, he cried, seems everyone cried during the presentation and I recieved a standing ovation. I realized his encouragement, resiliance, tenacity, and his love for humanity served me well for he did not preach it---he lived it.  "Death? --There is no Death--Only a Change of Worlds."  Chief Sealth (Seattle).  Rachel Peters, Ns'Kallam

Willie and Sylvia were next door neighbors on 25th Avenue in Tacoma, and and everyone in the neighborhood agreed they were the neighbors everyone would like to have. Their home was kept in pristine condition and the Parsons were an outstanding couple.  We were devastated when they moved, and the neigborhood has not been the same.  Sylvia, your sorrow is great, but you are strong. The source of your strength comes from all those  people who love you, and they are many.  Thank you for being you!

Thirty four years ago, when we met Sylvia and Willie we became their Tacoma parents.  It was a joy to have them both in our lives.  Willie touched all of our lives with his caring, patience, and love.  In everything there is a season, it is difficult, but we know this was his season to go and be with God.  Sylvia, we love you and you know we care, we are here for you.

It is often hard to put in words the feelings one has when someone passes who has touched their lives so greatly. It has been many years since I have had the pleasure of being in the company of Willie and Sylvia, but their words of wisdom are with me each and everyday.

The influence that Willie had on my life can never be measured. From memories of spending hours at his house in Washington State as a little girl while our families played cards and badminton to working every summer while I was in college at Pacific Luthern University with the MESA program. He always encouraged me to want something greater that what was given to me.

Of behalf of my Hinchen and Oliver family, we would like to exteded our deepest sympathies to Syliva and the Parson family. Please do not hesitate to call or ask for anything you need. We cherish the time we were able to have with Willie on this earth and know that he is a better place.

Mrs. Parson,

Thank you for sharing Dr. Parson, one true man of God. Doc always had the right words to say, the right questions to challenge your thinking, and the belief of true success for the students he touched. Many days at Evergreen Tacoma as a student and alum I would sit in the lab or Dr. Parson's office just waiting to hear the right words to ground my efforts and redirect my energy; with a smile and words of wisdom "Doc" would have the right words to help me soar to the next level. Each time that I had to make a choice in my career journey he would be the voice or reason. Once you all left the northwest he still was just a phone call away and would take the time to help me process and anchor my thoughts. Doc, "Dad Parson", Dr. Parson I will miss, although I will see you again in Heaven. "Judith", in the words of Doc that is what your mother named you! May the peace of God and the love of Christ be with the Parson family, the Allen U family and all the Greeners.

We the student''s here at the University will deeply miss Dr. Willie Parson. He was always "student''s first" and integrity driven. His character and dignity represented the true morals of his character and his fraternal organization of Alpha Phi Alpha. The lives that were touched by him found a strong sense of humanity, strength, and general self worth. It is a somber semester here at the University without his presence. He left us his strength, and wisdom and these investments will live out through the students that he touched. He will never be forgotten.

Dr. Parsons was an accomplished scientist and educator in our community.
However, whenever I saw him he never talked "science" even though we had that in common as career fields.  Instead, he always asked about my son and how he was progressing in his growth as a young person and in his studies. Above and beyond his commitment to excellence in science was Dr. Parson''''''''s commitment to fostering the growth and development of excellent young people and this was truly inspiring.

I thank you Willie for being my friend, my brother in Christ and my professor extraordinare. Thank you for taking time with me as an adult learner at Evergreen State College where I recieved my Bachelor''''s degree. I appreciated your guidance that gave me the confidence after so many years of being out of school. Pam reminds me of the confidence you also gave to our J''''nai as a high schooler in your summer MESA program. Your college letter of recommendation not only recognized her as a talented pianist but all as a talented mathmetician which gave her so much confidence and encouragment as you have given to so many youth and adult learners. What a wonderful soul!  Dr. Parson''''s is one of many inspiring professor''''s that I had the opportunity to meet, and to be taught by, while attending TESC-Tacoma Campus.  In my first year attending, not only did I find attending classes to be full of life-changing experiences, but that I was amidst a unique collective of dedicated and gifted professors.  I remember Dr. Parson''''s greeting me one evening by my first name, I was so surprised that he even knew me, as there were many students; and what even further astonished me, was that he recalled something I had said, which caused us to further dialogue.  After that conversation, he always greeted me with an inviting welcome and jovial  smile.  I am very lucky to have known him, and will keep him in my heart.

I was blessed to know Dr. Parson during my short stay at Allen University. He initially interviewed me for a position with the NASA program. After the interview, he told me that I was overqualified for the position and he personally forwarded my resume on to another department. He was very instrumental in enabling me to discover my passion for working with students at HBCU's. Dr. Parson was a genuine individual and truly cared about people. During the short time that I knew him, he encouraged me to pursue my doctorate degree and constantly stressed the importance of education and giving back to others. He really believed in me an was a very strong source of support during my short stay at Allen. I feel blessed to have known Dr. Parson and he will be missed. The world lost a great man and it was a privilege to have known him and crossed his path. I will be forever indebted to him. Thank you Dr. Parson. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

Hi There Sylvia, it me, AKA "DOSEY"

For man goes to his eternal home while mourners go about in the street. Remember Him/God before the silver cord is broken (the silver cord  is our breath) and the golden bowl is crushed, the pitcher by the well is shattered and the wheel at the cistern is crushed; then the dust will return to the earth (the body die) as it was, and the spirit will return to God (our Creator) who gave it,Ecclesiastes12v6-8.

For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing; they have no further reward,Ecclesiastes9v5.

Even though I am not physically present, I am with you in  spirit,(spirit of mind, heart)...1stCorin5v3.

For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain,Philippians1v21

We (I am) are of good courage, I say, and are willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be at home with the Lord, 2ndCorin5v8.

Sylvia in present time remember Jehovah-Nissi – "God is your Banner." The Hebrew word "Nissi" means my banner, or my covering, my protection and, also, my victory,Exodus 17:15.

Jehovah-Shalom – "God is your Peace." He is your Prince of Peace,Judges 6:23-24:Isaiah9v6

Jehovah-Shammah – "The Abiding Presence." The Lord desires that we walk with Him daily. The word abide means to stay, not to visit. What a wonderful Lord we serve,Ezekiel 48:35.

Wonderful talking with you...Cannot afford to attent my brother's funeral which breaks my heart for I do not have the $, however as the scripture states I will be there in spirit.

You spoke of our family with love and vigor as well as you desire to make an impact at home and beyond. You were encouraging when we decided to homeschool our children as well as consistently encouraging "our" education. My deepest condolences to Professor Parson's family. I will never forget Dr. Parson because he really made you feel like you had worth and was so gentle and a real cool man. I learned more about HIV scientifically and especially how we view HIV on a social level and who and what HIV/ AIDS looks like (everyone). Dr. Parson has impacted my life forever. I still have my HIV/ AIDS Binder and I am teaching post secondary college in the medical field. My last moments with Dr. Parson in 2003 I will never forget I was going through a very hard time I had experienced loss and gain all within a few months. My parents moved to SC after living Seattle for over 40 years and I was deeply affected by it as I was in my last year of college. On October 13th 2003 the day that my granddaughter was born, Dr. Parson announced to the entire school how excited he was for me and how blessed that I was to become a first time grandmother. It really lifted my spirits up and I will never forget him for doing that. Last but not least I will always remember a time that we were laughing and joking and he told me he was a scientist and my eyes got real big, and I was in awe. I was in the presence of not only a Black Man but a scientist. We laughed about my shock. You never see our people displayed and In my eyes Dr. Parson is the Back Scientist that will live forever in my heart. To the family he will live forever in the students that he so dearly affected in a positive way. May God have your heart at this difficult time in your life and may God ease the pain as days go by. Dr. Parson was my faculty in my very first program at Evergreen in 1982-83. Years later, we worked together as colleagues for 10 years at the Tacoma Campus. I said at his retirement party Give Back that he was the closest thing to a father that I ever had. I am much indebted to him personally for that and hold the highest regard for him as a teacher, a man and a human being. An absolute giant of a person. It's hard to believe such a life could come to an end. But his legacy lives on in the literally thousands of lives he impacted. He will be sorely missed. Tears are falling. Goodnight, Dear Willie Parson. I love you. To Willie's family, thank you for sharing him with all of us. We share your sorrow in his leaving this earth. We will cherish his memory.

My condolences to the family of Willie Parson, especially his wife, Sylvia. Dr Parson was my advisor at Evergreen State College Tacoma Program. I also enjoyed taking his Research Methods, his guidance writing, interrogating many questions and ideas in Seminar. When he retired I wrote a poem for him. ( If I can find it I may share it at a memorial celebration of his life.) Thanks for sharing your many gifts and encouragements. Blessings, Barbra Anderson

Although it's been nearly 15 years since I last spoke with Dr. Parson, seeing his picture and reading of the end of his life causes me to reflect on his contribution to my education and life.  I didn't stop growing when I left his classroom at Evergreen (Tacoma) - he taught me how to think, grow and learn.  What an incredible educator he was.  My condolences to Willie's wife and family over the loss of this wonderful, kind, brilliant man:  Willie Parson.  Thank you, Dr. Parson -- until we meet again.

Willie was one of my first teachers when I was a frightened, intimidated, 25-year-old freshman at Evergreen in 1983.  I had always been a terrible science student, but Willie opened up science to me in a completely new way.  He was kind, funny, warm, approachable, and put me at ease immediately.  He gave his time generously as I stumbled to find my way into a daily life of study.  He was one of the teachers who made me fall in love with learning, and from whom I found the courage, eventually, to decide to become a teacher myself.  I'll always be grateful that he was there during that first important year.  He made a huge difference in my life at that pivotal time.  My best wishes to all his family and friends.
