Be the first to offer your condolences on Curtiss's Tribute Wall
It is with deepest sympathy that Eddie & Jackie and the Support Staff of Nelson's Funeral Home announce the death of Mr. Curtiss Gilmore Howard, 81, of Ridgeway, South Carolina.
Mr. Howard departed his earthly life Saturday, September 14, 2019.
Curtiss Gilmore Howard was born July 26, 1938 in Northampton, MA to Rodney and Amner Rose Howard. After a fulfilling life, he passed away on September 14, 2019 at Prisma Health Richland Hospital in Columbia, SC.
Curt spent 37 years working for Pratt & Whitney Engine Research Center, a division of UTC in East Hartford, CT. During that time, he held a variety of positions including Bench Machinist, Tool & Die Maker and Process Planner.
His accomplishments during this time are noted by the acquisition of his degree from Central Connecticut State University and several US and International patents in his name for innovative improvements to tooling, fixtures, and processes in the production of aircraft engines.
Following his retirement in 1994, Curt turned his brilliant mind and learned skills for working on his classic cars and restoring horse drawn sleighs and carriages. He was also an avid craftsman designing and producing a multitude of unique creations; including scale model engines and fine custom jewelry boxes which he gifted to several family members.
Curt's love for animals and nature were unbound. He always kept several dogs and cats and nursed injured wild animals back to health. Though he competed in horse competitions, he loved to take pleasure rides through local state parks and cared for his horses to the end of their lives.
He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara (Ritter) Howard; his son, Curtiss G. Howard, II and his wife, Susan of CT; his daughter, Kristine L. (Howard) Hunniford of NC; a brother, Douglas A. Howard and his wife, Marylin of PA; as well as, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Ginger Howard Tullai of CT.
He will be missed by all.
