The Management and Support Staff of Nelson's Funeral Home, LLC announce the death of Mrs. Joan Wood, 71, of Queens, New York formerly of Elgin, South Carolina. 

Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, July 25, 2017, 11:00 a.m. at High Hill Baptist Church, 849 Watts Hill Road Lugoff, South Carolina.  Interment will follow in the church cemetery. 

Ms. Joan Wood lived a large part of her life in New York City. After moving to New York as a young adult, Joan went to school to learn secretarial work. She later studied at the City University of New York where she later developed a passion for botany. In her free time, she loved helping people and giving wise council to others. Joan was strong willed and believed in having good morals and values. She will be missed deeply. 

Joan was born June 15, 1946 in Elgin, South Carolina to the late Geneva Griffin and William Wood.  Joan was the fifth child of six children. She went home to God on July 12, 2017. 

She attended High Hill Baptist Church in Elgin, South Carolina prior to her moving to New York. 

She leaves to mourn her passing, two loving daughters, April Windley of Brooklyn, NY and Stacia O'Hara of Queens, New York; two sisters, Janie Nash of Charlotte, North Carolina; Blanche Gripper of Elgin, South Carolina; one brother, Thurmond Gripper of Elgin, South Carolina and a host of nieces and nephews and cousins. 

She was preceded in death by two brothers, James Gripper and Terry Gripper, both of Elgin, South Carolina.
