Lettie Canty Obituary

It is with profound sadness that Eddie & Jackie Nelson and the Support Staff of Nelson's Funeral Home announce the death of Mrs. Lettie Durham Canty, 77, of Winnsboro, South Carolina. 

Mrs. Canty transitioned into eternity peacefully Thursday night, June 28, 2018 at her residence surrounded by her loving family. 

Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 5, 2018, 2:00 p.m. at White Oak Baptist Church #1, 520 White Oak Church Road Winnsboro, South Carolina.  Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Rev. Henry Spann will officiate 

Mrs.  Canty will be available for public viewing Wednesday, July 4, 2018,  2:30 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.

Mrs. Lettie Durham Canty was born in Ridgeway, SC on December 12, 1940 to the late Willie and Sallie Durham.   She entered into eternal rest Thursday, June 28, 2018 peacefully at her home surrounded by family. 

She attended the Public Schools of Fairfield County and she was a member of White Oak Baptist Church #1 where she sang on the choir, was a member of the Pastor’s Aid Ministry and the Missionary Ministry.  Because of her faith in God, she took pleasure in caring for others even while she was busy raising her seven children.    In 1983, Lettie became a member of the O. E. S. Wide Awake Chapter #142 Order of the Eastern Stars. 

Lettie loved sewing, gardening, decorating, cooking and the peacefulness of fishing.   She had the reputation of being a great cook and the best biscuit maker.   Her kindness and welcoming spirit reflected the epitome of southern hospitality.    She not only welcomed family members into her home, but friends and strangers as well. 

Lettie worked at Uniroyal and was later employed for a number of years at Charm Corp in Ridgeway, SC.   After her employment at Charm Corp, she began working in the medical field which included a stint at Fairfield Manor Nursing Home, Fairfield Nursing Home, and she retired from Fairfield Memorial Hospital after her health began to decline. 

She will be dearly missed by the “Love of Her Life,” her beloved husband of 60 plus years, John Canty, Sr.   She is also survived by her children, Leroy Canty, John Canty, Jr. Odell (Lisa) Canty, Jean (Randy) Ashford, Melvin Canty, Carolyn (Reverend Earl) Stringfellow, and Tony Lee Canty; 20 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren; one God-child, Gregory Woods; two sisters, Katherine Pope and Sally (Frank) Canzater; one brother, Boykin Durham; six sisters-in-law, Terri Rutherford, Beatrice Durham, Irene Durham, Patricia Durham, Sadie Mae Thomas and Lottie Canty; four brothers-in-law, Frank Canzater, Robert Lee Canzater, Jason Canty and Alexander Belton; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. 

She was preceded in death by five brothers; three sisters, one grandson and one daughter-in-law.
