Mr. George Miner “Pokie” Jones, Jr., was born on January 30, 1970, to George Miner Jones Sr. and Patricia Richardson Jones of Ridgeway, South Carolina. He was called home to the eternal arms of our Lord and Savior on February 27, 2026, at the age of 56.

He was named George Miner Jones, Jr. when he was born, but, his name George never stuck or seemed like the name that fit him, thanks to a family friend he got the nickname “Pokie”, and he was never referred to as George again, except by his paternal grandfather and grandmother, everyone else knew him as Pokie.

He was a daredevil growing up and gave his parents a run for their money, as well his eldest sister, Leslie and younger sister, Tracie.  It is tough to say who got the most of his torment growing up. Leslie has said in the past that she remembered growing up with Pokie and he loved to play with scissors and would play with them with her, if memory serves right, he cut her at least once with them. Tracie came along and then he had twice the sisters to torment, she remembers that he would always threaten her if she told their parents about whatever mischief he had caused. He was the perfect example of the middle boy child of the family, but at the same time he loved his sisters fiercely and would do anything he could for them.

At an early age, he developed a love for animals; and his favorite pets were Labrador Retrievers, he had too many to count over the years that were his loyal companions, he leaves behind his most recent Chocolate Lab, Baxter, affectionally named after his grandfather, Baxter Jones. Pokie shared this love of animals with his sister Tracie and would always help to care for any stray animals she would bring home. Pokie also had a love for the outdoors, learning from his dad to love duck hunting. He later was most fond of fishing; his favorite place was to be on a riverbank or in a boat out on the lake. He loved to go catfishing and became a great angler, reeling in monster catfish from places like Lake Wateree and Santee. He was always after the next biggest fish he could get.

Pokie met the love of his life,  Shannon in 1998, and they were married in September 1999, at his most favorite place to be, Lake Wateree. He not only gained a wife with Shannon, but he also gained a new fishing partner in her dad, Mr. Bill. They could always be found camping on the weekends at the lake, after the next big catfish. Pokie was a dear friend to so many and was always there to help anyone out in any way that he could.

In December 2002, Pokie and Shannon welcomed their biggest pride and joy, a baby girl, Emily. Pokie may have been a tough guy, but Emily had him wrapped around her finger at first sight. He shared his love of the outdoor and fishing with Emily, even teaching her to drive his boat at a young age and teaching her how to catch the monster catfish. He could be heard calling for Emily, and he would always call her “Squirt” or “Peanut,” she was the greatest joy of his life, and he was so proud of the young lady she has grown into.

Pokie had a love for the construction industry, learning this from his dad.. He spent many years working as a lowboy driver, hauling many types of heavy equipment across the Southeast, but he always had to be home to his family every night. He spent some time as a heavy equipment operator, but his true love was hauling the machinery. Pokie was fortunate enough to be able to step back from the construction industry later in his life and became the caregiver for his father-in-law Mr. Bill, who was his best friend. Pokie cared for Mr. Bill until the time he was called home, a true testament Pokie being a true family man. Pokie leaves behind a legacy and will be truly remembered and missed fondly.

Pokie is survived by his parents, wife Shannon of twenty-six years, daughter Emily Jones, sister, Tracie Jones (Travis) Byrd, and nieces, Lindsay Timms, Clara Byrd (Will), and nephews Zach Timms (Chrystal), and Michael Byrd (Erika), a great niece and nephew and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Leslie Jones Timms; his father-in-law, Bill Sneed, and mother-in-law, Pat Sneed.

“The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.” Numbers 6:24-26
