Mrs. Jane Houze Castles, 83, of Winnsboro, South Carolina passed away on Thursday, January 25, 2024, surrounded by her family at MUSC Health Hospital Downtown in Columbia, South Carolina. She was born at home in Winnsboro, South Carolina on October 12, 1940 to the late Clifford Smith and Katie William Houze. She graduated from Mt. Zion Institute in 1958. Jane met the love of her life, Sam “Buddy” Castles whom she is preceded in death, in the eighth grade which led to 55 wonderful years of marriage.

Jane was known to many in the Greenbrier Community where she lived for over 56 years. She was quick to smile and provide a loving embrace along with words of wisdom. Her homemade cookies were a staple in her home which she frequently shared with friends and loved ones. Known by her sons and their friends as “Mama Jane,” she never missed an opportunity to provide them with a loving meal.  To her family, she was their rock. She was the matriarch held in high regard because of her selfless love, caring actions, and steady support which she always strived to instill in others. Jane and Bud were active members of the V8 Club and were well known around town for their Sunday drives in the ’40 Ford.

Those left to carry on her legacy are Samuel “Sammie” Lewis Castles, III, Clifford Houze Castles both of Winnsboro; her niece, Katie (Matt) Lytton of Vale, North Carolina; most special great-nephew, Levi Lytton of Vale, North Carolina; two brothers-in law, Billy (Elaine) Castles of Winnsboro, South Carolina and Carol McGee of Spartanburg, South Carolina; numerous nieces and nephews;  special companion, Stormy who was regularly spoiled with pets, treats and who often could be found eating his dinner along side Jane.

In addition to her parents and husband, Jane was preceded in death by her sister, Weda Jo Bartless, sister-in-law, Emma Castles McGee, and brother-in-law, Paul Castles.
