Phyllis Russell Obituary

The Management (Eddie & Jackie Nelson) and the support staff of Nelson's Funeral Home announce the passing of Mrs. Phylliss A. Russell, 68, of Ridgeway, South Carolina.

Mrs. Russell passed Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at her residence surround by her loving and devoted family.

Phyllis Russell entered Heaven’s gates on December 3, 2024, following a brief but challenging illness. She was surrounded by love, with her devoted daughter, Barbara and husband, Kirk by her side. Phyllis’ journey was marked by the unwavering support of her family, including her daughter, Barbara and son Michael, her siblings, Marilyn and Rob, and Kirk’s children, Vicky and Jim Wheeler. Their care and compassion during her time in hospice, which began in September, brought her great comfort.

Born on January 26, 1956, in Kingston, NY, Phyllis was a gifted musician whose talent as a flutist shone brightly from a young age. She earned recognition as one of the few to achieve a 6AA rating in New York State solo flute competitions, showcasing her extraordinary skill and passion for music.

Phyllis was a true advocate for animals, dedicating her time and heart to rescuing and fostering countless creatures, particularly kittens. She volunteered with organizations such as the Fairfield County Humane Society, fostering an abundance of animals and leaving a legacy of compassion.

A lover of history and craftsmanship, Phyllis cherished antiques and old homes. She and Kirk undertook the ambitious renovation of a century-old home in Ridgeway, SC, restoring its charm and beauty. Her love of gardening brought these homes to life, and her remarkable collection of depression glassware remains a treasure for her children and grandchildren to carry forward.

Phyllis and Kirk shared a deep appreciation for the seasons, often traveling to the North Carolina mountains to enjoy the scenery and stay in cozy local inns.

Her professional life was equally impressive. Phyllis excelled as a Computer Programmer at Computer Science Corporation in Blythewood, SC, where her expertise in legacy computer languages earned her respect and admiration throughout her 29-year career.

Phyllis is predeceased by her father, Robert F. Spindler, of Rosendale, NY, and is survived by her mother, Clara L. Spindler, of Lakeland, FL. She is lovingly remembered by her husband, Kirk Wheeler; her children Michael (Kathryn) Russell and Barbara Grubbs; and her cherished grandchildren, Sophia, Eli, and Matthew of Tampa, FL. She also leaves behind her sister Marilyn (Rick) Piersma and their daughters, Aricka (Marty) Ward and April (Evan) O’Brien, along with their four grandchildren. Her brother Robert (Mark Hooper) Spindler and their sons, JT (Katie) Hooper and Jacob (Owen) Hooper, and their four grandchildren also lovingly remember Aunt Phyllis.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the Spirit Life Christian Church, especially Pastor Justin, for their care and support, as well as Prisma Hospice, with special thanks to Shonda and Nurse Louise, for their compassionate service during Phyllis’ final months. They also wish to thank the donors of Phyllis’ GoFundMe campaign, whose generosity provided much-needed assistance.
