The Management (Eddie & Jackie Nelson), regret to announce the passing of Mr. William Herbert Hinnant, 84, of Ridgeway, South Carolina. Mr. Hinnant passed Thursday, January 9, 2025.
Mr. William Herbert Hinnant, III, affectionately known as “Bill,” was born in Columbia, South Carolina on June 12, 1940. His parents were the late Naomi Josephine Stevenson of Neeses, SC and William Herbert Hinnant, Jr. of Columbia, SC. Bill lived for 74 years at his home in the Saint Andrews area.
He graduated with a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in history from the University of South Carolina, and taught history for a short time in Columbia. He developed a love of books and history, which was ongoing throughout his life. He enjoyed growing camellias and azaleas and created an absolutely beautiful garden around his home before it was taken for highway construction in 2021.
He is survived by his sister, Claire Hinnant Reed of Oak Harbor, Washington; his niece, Karen Reed (Scott Kunnanz) of Yakima, Washington; and nephew, Mark Reed (Charlotte), Ethan Reed of Bend, Oregon; cousins, Sandy, Rosenfeld, and Bobbie Jo Seaborn of Greenville, SC; his friend, neighbor and helper, Hal Lominick of Columbia, SC.
His ashes will be interred at Aimwell Cemetery in Ridgeway, South Carolina on February 20 , 2025 at 11:00 am in an informal graveside gathering. Nelson’s Funeral Home, 270 N. Dogwood Ave., Ridgeway, South Carolina, is in charge of local arrangements.
Memorials may be made to South Carolina Mental Health or to Schizophrenia research.
