The Management and Support Staff of Nelson's Funeral Home sadly announce the death of Mrs. Hattie Hopkins of  Winnsboro, South Carolina.  Mrs. Hopkins died Monday, August 10, 2015, at Palmetto Health Hospital, Columbia, South Carolina.

Services for Mrs. Hattie Jane Hopkins will be held Friday, August 14, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Shady Grove Independent Church, 5253 Newberry Road, Winnsboro, South Carolina, with burial in the church’s cemetery.

Hattie Jane Hopkins, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, inspired multiple generations of family and friends through her altruistic love for others.  A courageous lady who spoke with candor to all, she was known throughout the community for providing assistance for those persons who needed help, her extended family cookouts, and for her service as the Lead Usher at Shady Grove Independent Church.  She loved her family, particularly the grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and looked forward to attending all of their significant milestones in life, such as graduations, weddings, and birthday celebrations.  Always one to encourage her grandchildren to do well, they adored her as much as she adored them.  They wholeheartedly loved their “Grandma Hattie”.

Hattie Jane (Neal) Hopkins was born November 23, 1939 in Winnsboro, South Carolina, the daughter of the late James and Lillian Neal.  She passed into the arms of angels on August 10, 2015 at Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia, South Carolina after a long illness.  She was educated in the public school system of Fairfield County and was a very proud alumna of Fairfield High School.  After high school, she and her young family moved to Hartford, Connecticut where she worked for The Traveler’s Insurance Company as a Processing Clerk.  Later, the family relocated back to South Carolina where she worked as a Food Service Worker with the Fairfield County School District until her retirement.

After retirement, she continued to prepare food for others, and was always willing to share her techniques for cooking delicious meals.  While she never entered any of her food items into any competitions, it is widely believed by everyone who ever tasted her macaroni and cheese casserole that it is the best in the world!

Hattie Jane is survived by her husband of 58 years, Lindsay Hopkins and their five children, Randy (Fred) Simpson, Lindsay Jr. (Cheryl) Hopkins, Timothy (Jewel) Hopkins, Eugene (Janice) Hopkins, and Stevie (Michelle) Hopkins; her grandchildren, Jessica (Landon) Rembert, Fredrick Simpson, Alicia Hopkins, Christopher (Shresha) Hopkins, Corbin Hopkins, Alexia Hopkins, Stephanie Hopkins, Steven Hopkins, and Jasmine Hopkins;  five great-grandchildren, Nevaeh, Landon, Logan, Lauren, Skylar, and Jaxon;  two brothers, Louis Neal and James E. Neal; one sister, Margaret Tape along with a host of nieces, nephews, other family members and friends, including Major Johnson, a family friend loved like one of her sons.

She was preceded in death by four brothers; Robert, John, Felton, and Clarence; and three sisters, Elizabeth, Lillie, and Carlene.
