Mr. Lewis Johnson formally of Elgin, South Carolina died Sunday, July 31, 2011 at the Veteran's Administration Medical Center in Washington, DC.   Funeral Services will be held Saturday, August 6, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Green Hill Baptist Church, 2215 Green Hill Road, Lugoff, South Carolina.   Visitation will be held at Nelson's Funeral Home Friday, August 5, 2011 from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Lewis graduated from Jackson High School in Camden, South Carolina.  After graduating from high school, Lewis entered the United States Army and fought in the Vietnam War where he received the “Air Medal with “V” Device Award.  This award was bestowed on Lewis for his acts of heroism during a medical evacuation mission where he repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire to aid in the safe loading of the injured personnel aboard his helicopter.

After his discharge from the Army, Lewis attended the Washington Technical Institute and received an Associates’ Degree in Police Science.   Lewis continued his education at the American University in Washington, D.C., where he received a degree in Administration of Justice.

In 1982, Lewis was licensed to sell real estate in the Washington, D. C. area.   He was a very successful realtor with Century 21 until his health begin to fail.  

Lewis attended Emmanuel Baptist Church in Washington, D. C., where he was a quiet; but dedicated disciple.  He will be missed by his church family.

In addition to his mother and father, Lewis was preceded in death by three brothers, Johnny Johnson, Willie Johnson, Major Johnson and one sister, Hattie Gripper.

Lewis leaves to cherish his precious memories forever four brothers, Henry (Lila) Johnson of Elgin, South Carolina, Caleb (Ella) Johnson, of New Carrollton, Maryland, Leroy Johnson of Hartford, Connecticut and Ervin (Brenda) Johnson of Columbia, South Carolina; four sisters, Mary Lee of Columbia, South Carolina, Rosalee Lawhorn of Lugoff, South Carolina, Alberta (Woodrow) Lawhorn of Washington, D. C., and Marguerite (Woodrow) Brown of Lugoff, South Carolina and a host of other relatives and friends.
