There are no words to express the profound impact that my cousin Paula Bennett had and continues to have on my life. At the age of 11 in Camden and Lugoff South Carolina I watch with bright eyed inspiration as my cousins Paula,Freda,Vera,Amelia,Jocye, and Paula's mother,Margie, sang unforgettable arrangements of " Lord Help" " I'm Going To Work" "Will My Jesus Be Waiting" and many others. They would go from church to church to church singing as the The Family Gospel Singers. Sometimes they were so in demand that they would sing, give an offering, and excuse themselves right away in order to make it to the next singing program.
Paula was a bright shinning super star to me. I tell my students today that being a star doesn't mean you're famous it means you SHINE. Thats what Paula did all her life, SHINE. You know when you admire someone so much that it makes you nervous speaking with them, thats what my super star did to me. She always calmed my nerves as only Paula could do. When I was a boy she took the time out of her busy schedule to give me piano lesson once a week at Mather Academy in Camden South Carolina. She never charged me one penny for her time or her knowledge. I went on to have a good career as a singer/musician traveling the world but always keeping in the back of my mind that one day I would go home and sing with my cousins on the Family Gospel Singers. My heart is broken over her passing. I wanted to write and arrange with her. I never told Paula how her example guided and shaped my life and my career. I'm saddened that she is gone too soon. But I know that she worked until her day came and I know Jesus was there to meet her, there to greet her, that he was waiting, waiting for Paula. Every note I sing or write is because of Paula and the love she showed to me. There is only one thing that I have possessed and carried with me from the age of 11 to now the age of 49, one thing that I have carried all over the world, kept with me as I moved from Japan to Spain from California to New York City and that is a cassette recording of The Family Gospel Singers with Paula singing lead. I will cherish it till my dying day. Paula Rest In Peace. I will sing with you again some sweet day up yonder. Thank you Paula for sharing Paula with us all. I love you sweet cousin. I am sorry to hear of your loss. The death of a loved one is one of the most devastating experiences a human can face. At times, the loss can seem unbearable. The Bible teaches; "And the last enemy, death, will be brought to nothing." (1Corinthians 15;26) I hope this message will help you cope with the loss of your loved one.

To the Bennett Family,

I was sorry to hear the news from James Quarles that Paula had passed away.  Eventhough I don't live in the area, I keep in touch with as many people as possible.  I have childhood memories of hanging out at the Bennett house and riding bicycles in the neighborhood.

May Paul rest in peace.

Heartfelt prayers and condolences to Faye, Marketa and family. So many joyous memories I and my family will forever cherish. We pray that you will lean on the one that can comfort you when no one else can but Christ Jesus.

Remember all the beautiful songs she sang as her fingers stroked the piano. And let us not forget the looks she would give us if we were out of key or anything else...lol. She will always be remembered for her many years of service to the Sutton Branch Baptist Church. Love and blessings from Lil Bennie (aka Punkin), Arthuretta, Brittany, Brent and Bradley Murphy
